WEST KENNEBUNK — In connecting rescued animals with military veterans and their families over Veterans Day Weekend, the Animal Welfare Society is helping to create second chances and new beginnings.

This weekend, AWS pays tribute to those who have served on behalf of all Americans by offering a 15 percent reduction for all adoption of pets at the shelter on Saturday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 11.

Besides having pets available in the AWS Adoption Center, which is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 pm, rescue pets all will be available at a special event at PetSmart at Biddeford Crossing as part of National Adoption Weekend.

AWS will have cats, kittens and dogs available during the event at PetSmart on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will be an information table with handouts about the services provided by the Sanford Veterans Administration.

In the kids zone, children will have a chance to make Thank You Cards for veterans which will be delivered to the VA on Tuesday. All veterans, whether they adopt or not, will receive a small patriotic pin to thank them for their service.

This event is open to the public and adoption fees vary by animals, but all military veterans will receive 15 percent off their adoption fee as AWS honors their service to our country.
