BRUNSWICK — Anna Kousky scored an unassisted goal in the second overtime to lift the Brunswick High School girls soccer team to a 1-0 Class A North quarterfinal win over seventh-seeded Skowhegan on Wednesday.
The second-seeded Dragons (12-1-2) host No. 3 Messalonskee on Friday (time TBA), while Skowhegan finished 6-8-1.
“A great game between two battling teams on a very windy evening in Brunswick,” said Brunswick coach Martyn Davison. “I thought we played very well and created so many opportunities to score. Skowhegan defended well and made it an exciting game. Credit to both teams and a great contest.”
Brunswick goaltender Aisley Snell turned away eight shots for the win, while Indians netminder Abby Burkingham had 15 saves.
Boys soccer
FREEPORT — Jesse Bennell recorded three goals in the first half, and second-seeded Freeport (10-3-2) defeated the seventh-seeded Leavitt Hornets (5-7-4), 5-0 in a Class B South quarterfinal.
Shea Wagner added two goals for Freeport, which advances to host third-seeded Greely (8-5-2) on Saturday in Freeport.
The Falcons darted out to a 4-0 halftime lead.
Freeport was 1-0-1 against Greely this season, playing to a 0-0 deadlock on Sept. 5 and rolling to a 3-0 win at Cumberland on Sept. 28.
Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK — The field hockey team failed to complete the second half comeback and fell, 2-1, to Tufts on a Wednesday evening.
The Jumbos ended the regular season at 14-1 (9-1 NESCAC) and the second seed in the NESCAC. Bowdoin earned the No. 6 seed for playoffs at 11-4 (6-4 NESCAC).
Tufts jumped out to a 1-0 lead 8:38 into the game. Gigi Tutoni carried the ball from right to left and put a reverse chip mast Maddie Ferrucci.
The Polar Bears looked for an equalizer on a penalty corner 20 minutes into play, but Issy Del Priore came up with a pair of defensive saves on two hard shots.
The Jumbos doubled their lead 15 minutes into the second half. Marguerite Salamone batted a rebound out of the air.
Emma Stevens cut the lead in half with five minutes to play. Elizabeth Growney moved the ball through three Tufts defenders pushed a pass to Kara Finnerty, who sent a shot to the right post where Stevens put the goal away.
Tufts held a slight 13-10 edge in shots and 8-6 corner advantage. Ferrucci made five stops for Bowdoin. Andie Stallman made four stops.
The Polar Bears will play at third-seeded Williams on Saturday.
