TOPSHAM — Everett Horch scored the lone goal with 23:26 remaining in regulation to lift the Brunswick High School boys soccer team to a 1-0 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win over “Battle of the Bridge” rival Mt. Ararat on Tuesday at Foreside Field.

The unassisted goal by Horch lifted the Dragons to 7-5-2. Brunswick appears locked into the No. 4 spot in the Class A North Heal Point Standings.

Mt. Ararat fell to 11-2-1 and will enter the postseason as the No. 2 seed. The Eagles play at No. 1 Lewiston in the KVAC title game on Saturday at 1 p.m. before hosting a quarterfinal next week.

The Eagles held an 8-4 shot advantage, but Brunswick keeper Jack McDiarmid turned away eight shots for the shutout.

Sean Roberts and James Singleton each played one half in goal for Mt. Ararat, combining on three saves.

Hayden Fletcher scored with 1:51 remaining to lift Monmouth to a Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lisbon.

Mikey Dolan scored earlier in the second half for the Mustangs (11-3) to tie the score at 1-1.

The Greyhounds (5-8-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Levi Levesque that was set up by senior Cam Poisson.

Monmouth next plays in the Class C South postseason, which it enters as the fifth seed.

Lisbon looks like it will fall a few points shy of the playoffs.

Matt Chapman had a a goal and an assist to pace Wiscasset/Boothbay past Spruce Mountain in MVC action.

Tim Chappelle, Jordan Espeut, Bayly Gaughan-Carrasco and John Hodson each had a goal for the Wolverines, who finished the season with a 6-8 record.

Caleb Gabriele made nine saves in the shutout. Jacob Bryant also had nine saves for Spruce Mountain (2-12).

The Shipbuilders finished the regular season with a 4-7-3 mark and will likely head to Leavitt for a Class B South prelim later this week.

Sheamus Mann set up Jacob Brochu for the opening goal for Morse. Asa Hodgdon found Jack Komilov for a 2-0 lead, and Mann set up Lucas Ouimette, followed by a Sam Kirkpatrick goal off an Alden Harkins corner kick for a 4-0 Shipbuilders lead at the half.

In the second frame, Ouimette and Isaak Flaming, from Ethan Pascuzzo, finished the scoring.

Miles Bobbe had four saves for the shutout.

Volleyball

BRUNSWICK — Brunswick/Mt. Ararat finished the regular season with a 3-0 loss to Deering.

The Dragons, the No. 10 seed in Class A after a 4-10 campaign, heads to No. 7 Cheverus on Thursday for a preliminary contest.

Deering won by set scores of 25-8, 25-6, 25-19.

Catherine Balzano finished with five aces and seven kills for the Rams (9-5).

Brunswick/MTA was led by Kassidy Dixon with one kill and five aces, Lauren Whitlock with one ace, eight assists and eight digs, and Phoebe Churney with a passing average of 2.0.

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin women’s volleyball team set a program record for a best start to a season in a 3-0 non-conference win over Bates on Tuesday night.

The Polar Bears improved to 19-1 this fall, breaking the mark set by the 2011 squad. Bates fell to 9-7.

Bowdoin took the victory by set scores of 25-20, 25-12, 27-25.

The Polar Bears took command late in the opening set. Up 20-19, Bowdoin closed the set on a 5-1 run, sparked by a kill from setter Kate Kiser.

Bowdoin cruised in the second set, jumping to a 10-2 lead and leading by double digits throughout to take a 2-0 advantage.

The third set was easily the most competitive of the night and the Bobcats appeared poised to force a fourth, holding a 22-18 lead and serving for the set at 24-23. But Caroline Flaharty tied the score for Bowdoin, and the Polar Bears took advantage of two late attack errors to clinch the win.

Flaharty led Bowdoin with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Sophia Pahl pitched in nine kills and eight digs along with two service errors. Kiser posted 32 assists, while Lisa Sheldon earned 23 digs for the Polar Bears. Cori Gray had three blocks.

Bowdoin heads to Massachusetts this weekend for the Hall of Fame Invitational, where the Polar Bears will open against Bridgewater State at Smith College on Friday at 7 p.m.

BUCKFIELD — Molly Bourget scored the only goal Buckfield needed for an East-West Conference victory over Richmond on Tuesday.

The win is Buckfield’s first over Richmond in more than 10 years.

Bourget’s goal came with 15 minutes to go in the game Hannah Shields, and Julia Dow set up the score. Ruby Cyr made eight saves for the Bucks (8-5-1).

Liz Johnson made nine saves for the Bobcats (10-3-1).

With the final Heal Point Standings to be announced on Thursday, Richmond appears to have claimed the No. 1 seed in Class D South.

Kylee Pelletier sparked a second-half comeback for Mountain Valley with two goals in an MVC win over Wiscasset.

Kierstyn Lyons had the third goal in the second half for the Falcons (2-12). Courtney Therrien and Saydie Garbarini each had assists in the win. Taylor Henry made 14 saves in net.

Kateleen Trask gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the first half off an assist by Gwen Webber. Lilly Sousa made 10 saves in the loss.

The Wolverines will miss out on the playoffs after finishing 1-13.

Host Pine Tree Academy built a 6-0 halftime lead in a Class D South win over Greater Portland Christian (1-11).

The Breakers are 6-5 and likely face Hyde in a Class D South preliminary later this week.

Madison Waterman scored twice and the Breakers (6-5). Adriana DePalma, Marjorie Johnson, Anna Marden and Sydney Krueger each added a goal each.

Madison Gant scored all three goals for Greater Portland Christian, while Clairette Kirezi finished with eight saves.

Taylor Waterman and DePalma combined for 10 saves for the Breakers.

The Dragons and Eagles settled for a KVAC tie at Brunswick.

Alexa Gurney staked Mt. Ararat (8-5-1) to a 1-0 halftime lead, with Eliza Libby earning an assist.

Brunswick (11-1-2) tied the game on an Emma Banks goal. Isabella Banks had the helper.

In goal, Dragons Beth Labbe and Aisley Snell combined for 13 saves, while Abby Sirois turned away 10 shots for the Eagles.

Both teams will play in the Class A North quarterfinals. Brunswick appears to be the No. 2 seed and will host a quarterfinal, while Mt. Ararat appears to be the No. 5 seed and will likely visit No. 4 Bangor.

Abigail Veillux scored on a pair of free kicks to lift the Mariners to the win at McMann Field in Bath.

Morse fell to 5-6-2 and hosts Gardiner today at 4 p.m.

Abby Sreden turned away seven shots in the Shipbuilder goal.
