I find it interesting that there are candidates complaining about “wasting tax payer dollars” on the Maine Clean Election fund. Perhaps those candidates are wealthy, or perhaps they are funded by large business and corporations or maybe they are funded by “think tanks” like the American Legislative Exchange Council who basically write your legislation while your representative rubber stamps it with his or her name. Whatever the reason for their complaints, if I donate to the Maine Clean Election Fund it is MY money.
My tax dollars pay for a lot of things but not the Clean Election Fund. That is my money, my “disposable” income to do with it what ever I want. If I want to spend $5.00 to support local candidates it is nobody’s business but my own. I do not consider it a waste. I consider it an investment in candidates who want to be sure that no one is going to come back to them and ask them for a favor, for a vote, for a rubber stamp.
I like the Clean Election fund. For a change I know who is paying for the candidate who runs clean. I know how my money is being used. I know that the candidate I choose to support is not asking for anything else from me but my vote on election day.
