Police charged a father and his two sons after a “family shootout” Saturday night in Limington, the York County Sheriff’s office said.
No one was injured, although two vehicles were shot and damaged.
Officers were called to Boothby Road around 10 p.m. for a report of gunshots. Someone at the home reported that a domestic squabble had led to an exchange of gunfire and a car crash.
When police arrived, they found a chaotic scene, York County Sheriff William King said in a statement. They eventually determined that the home was owned by Walter Sellick, 64, and that Sellick’s two adult sons, Joshua Sellick, 37, and Jeremy Sellick, 39, were at the house visiting.
Police said the three men had been shooting various weapons on the property, and at least two of them had been drinking.
An argument erupted between the two brothers, which spilled outside the home into a physical fight. After the fight, Joshua Sellick retrieved a shotgun from his vehicle and shot at his brother’s truck, striking the vehicle in the front grill area, the statement said.
Joshua Sellick then tried to back out of the driveway in his vehicle, but his brother, who was also armed, shot at Joshua’s car as it was leaving, striking the vehicle in the driver’s door and rear left passenger door.
Joshua then accelerated quickly from the home, but lost control on Boothby Road and crashed into a ditch.
By chance, two off-duty Limington Fire Fighters were passing by and witnessed the crash.
“Not realizing they were in the middle of a family shoot out, (the firefighters) tried to render aid,” King said in the statement.
Police arrived and made a tactical approach of the house after determining the firefighters were safe. Deputies made contact with Joshua Sellick, who surrendered peacefully on the roadway.
Jeremy Sellick was inside the home with his father. They initially refused to surrender to police because they wanted to see the deputies before disarming themselves. After a short standoff, deputies negotiated with the two men and they peacefully surrendered.
Jeremy Sellick was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a class-C felony. He posted $1,000 bail and was released from York County Jail July 8. He is due back at Alfred Superior Court Sept. 7.
Joshua Sellick was also charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, posted $500 bail and was released July 9. He is scheduled to appear in Alfred Superior Court Oct. 3.
Walter Sellick was given a summons for reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, but deputies continued to investigate the situation and determined that Walter Sellick was prohibited from possessing firearms because of a prior felony conviction. After a judge granted a search warrant, police found six rifles or shotguns and two handguns in the home.
Walter Sellick’s bail was set at $2,500 and he remains in York County Jail. He was slated to be arraigned at 1 p.m. Wednesday via video arraignment.
