Ethan Avantaggio, Lincoln Academy senior, defense: A transfer from Cape Elizabeth where he started as a junior, Avantaggio was a team leader, shut-down defender and occasional offensive spark at long-stick midfielder for the Class C runner-up. Avantaggio scored nine goals with 16 assists and 98 ground balls.
Hank Duvall, Waynflete senior, midfield: Solidly built with a strong and accurate shot, Duvall finished the season with 54 goals and 29 assists, scoring seven goals in the Flyers’ Class C championship game win against Lincoln Academy. He plans to play at Union College.
Noah Edborg, Thornton Academy senior, attack: The co-SMAA Player of the Year and an established sharp-shooter who consistently drew an opponent’s top defender, Edborg led the Class A champion with 58 goals and added 17 assists after scoring 59 goals as a junior.
Aiden Glover, Brunswick junior, attack: A dynamic offensive threat, Glover scored at an eye-popping rate for the Class B champion with 74 goals and 44 assists, bringing his three-year career totals to 175 goals and 104 assists. He has verbally committed to play at Merrimack College.
Brendan Hickey, Falmouth senior, defense: A three-time Maine Sunday Telegram All-State selection, Hickey combined strong low-defense skills with the ability to run or pass the ball in transition. He caused 16 turnovers with 64 ground balls, two goals and three assists. Hickey will play at Division II national champion Merrimack College.
Aaron Hoekstra, Portland senior, goalie: After missing most of his junior season with an injury, Hoekstra keyed the Bulldogs’ rise to the Class A North final after a 2-10 season, providing leadership and maturity while allowing 4.75 goals a game, stopping 68 percent of shots on goal and making 123 total saves.
C.J. LaBreck, Thornton Academy junior, midfield: The 2018 Telegram Player of the Year had an outstanding season and an exceptional postseason, scoring four goals with four assists in the South regional final and six goals in Thornton’s championship-game win. LaBreck finished with 44 goals and 34 assists, and keyed Thornton’s transition game. LaBreck has verbally committed to play for NCAA Division I Monmouth.
Reece Lagerquist, Scarborough senior, defense: While the Red Storm struggled to a 3-9 season, Lagerquist continued to impress with his versatility, taking faceoffs, playing in the man-up offense and clearing the ball. He plans to spend a post-graduate year at Deerfield Academy and then play at Dartmouth College.
Miles Lipton, Waynflete junior, midfield: Regarded as one of the most creative and difficult to cover offensive threats in the state, Lipton scored 51 goals with 15 assists, including seven goals in the Class C title game. He has verbally committed to play for Boston University.
Cooper Mehlhorn, South Portland junior, attack: A first-team SMAA choice with an excellent change of direction and head for the game, Mehlhorn scored 38 goals with 27 assists, gathered up 68 ground balls and was praised by opposing coaches for his high lacrosse IQ.
Finn Raymond, Cape Elizabeth senior, midfield: A do-it-all player for the Capers, Raymond played both offensive and defensive midfield roles, spent some time at attack and also took faceoffs when needed. He finished with 21 goals and 26 assists, and led the Capers to the Class A South final.
Riley Reed, Falmouth junior, long-stick midfielder: An athletic defender who causes havoc and a repeat Telegram All-State selection, Reed caused 20 turnovers with 84 ground balls, four goals and an assist. He was the co-SMAA Player of the Year with Edborg.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Don Glover, Brunswick: The Dragons advanced to the state final for the fifth straight season and claimed the Class B crown with overtime wins in the semifinal against Yarmouth and the state final against Greely. Brunswick, which graduated 13 players from its 2017 Class A title team, was also the MPA Sportsmanship Award pick in Class B.
