An 18-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting Sunday afternoon in Portland’s East Bayside neighborhood, according to police.
Portland police also said a 30-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound during a confrontation between the two, but details regarding the circumstances remained sketchy Sunday night.
Lt. Robert Martin, spokesman for Portland police, said in a statement that officers were called to the area of Cumberland Avenue and Mayo Street around 4:18 p.m. by a resident who heard gunshots.
Officers discovered a woman inside a red Jeep Patriot, who had suffered a gunshot wound. The woman was treated at the scene before being transported to Maine Medical Center with a non-life threatening injury.
Portland police then began looking for a man who had fled the scene before officers arrived. He was located a short time later on Marginal Way near the city’s sewage treatment plant. That is when officers discovered that he had also been shot.
He was treated at the scene before he was transported to Maine Medical Center with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
“Detectives continue to work on identifying witnesses and speaking with those involved to determine what happened,” Martin said in the statement. “We believe that all parties have been identified and there is no risk to the public at this time.”
No one has been charged or arrested in connection with the shooting, but anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Portland police at 874-8575.
