Game notes: Massabesic is the defending Class A champion (Pike scored four times in a 13-4 victory over Messalonskee last year) and is playing in the state final for the fifth time in six years. The Mustangs also won in 2014. Drain was the 2017 Maine Sunday Telegram Player of the Year, and Champlin was an all-SMAA selection. The Mustangs defeated Kennebunk 10-9 in the South final on Wednesday to avenge their only loss of the season. Wasina stopped six free position plays against Kennebunk. Falmouth moved up to Class A this year after losing in the Class B South final the previous three years – all to Kennebunk. The Yachtsmen advanced to the title game by beating Cheverus, 17-5, in the North final. Camelio had seven goals, and Sarazin added five goals and three assists. Massabesic edged Falmouth on May 7 in a game that was tied 6-6 at the half. Falmouth is strong on the faceoff with Camelio leading the way. Once in the offensive zone, the Yachtsmen like to set up their attack, which features lots of cutting to work the ball for close shots. Smithwick is the lone senior on Falmouth’s roster; Massabesic has 11 seniors.

Players to watch: Cape Elizabeth – Chloe Chapin (sr., attack), Susie Graham (sr., attack), Brooke Harvey (jr. defense), Tory McGrath (jr., defense), Erin Foley (jr., goalie)

Yarmouth – Meredith Lane (sr., midfield/attack), Eva Then (sr., midfield), Hannah Corey (sr., defense)

Game notes: This is Yarmouth’s seventh state title game appearance in the last eight seasons. The last two years, the Clippers lost in the championship game to Kennebunk. Eva Then, a returning Maine Sunday Telegram All-State selection, led Yarmouth with six goals in its 17-10 semifinal victory against Messalonskee on Wednesday. Lane added two goals and six assists. Yarmouth’s McGrath is a superb lockdown defender, while Harvey is adept on defense and offense. The Clippers’ only two losses came in a three-game stretch early in the season to Class A powerhouses Massabesic and Kennebunk. Cape Elizabeth has made progress in Alex Spark’s four years as head coach. She guided the Capers to the South semifinals in 2017 and to the quarterfinals in 2015. Sophomore Karli Chapin scored four first-half goals – one short-handed to snap a 3-3 tie – in Cape’s 9-8 semifinal victory over Greely on Wednesday. Yarmouth downed Cape Elizabeth 13-10 in the 2014 state final for its first of back-to-back titles. That’s Cape’s only previous appearance in the state title game. In all, the Clippers have won six state championships.
