TRACK AND FIELD
Penn State junior Isaiah Harris of Lewiston won the 800 meters Friday night at the NCAA championships at Eugene, Oregon.
Harris finished in a personal-best time of 1 minute, 44.75 seconds.
Marco Arop of Mississippi State finished second in 1:45.25, and the pre-meet favorite, Michael Saruni of Texas-El Paso, was third in 1:45.31.
HOCKEY
NHL: UMaine forward Nolan Vesey signed a two-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers after his draft rights were traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2020 draft.
Vesey, the brother of New York Rangers forward Jim Vesey, played four years for Maine and scored a career-high 25 points this past season.
TENNIS
BUENO DIES: Maria Bueno, a Brazilian tennis great who won three Wimbledon singles titles and four at the U.S. Open in the 1950s and 1960s, and helped usher in modern women’s tennis, died in Sao Paulo after battling mouth cancer. She was 78.
Bueno was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1978 and was more recently contributing regularly to Brazilian television at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and other major tennis events.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Houston Texans safety Andre Hal was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and insists he will beat it.
Hal is 26 and starting his fifth year with the Texans. He was drafted by Houston in 2014 out of Vanderbilt. He started all 16 games last season and had three interceptions.
• The Detroit Lions will participate in joint training camp practices before exhibition games with the Oakland Raiders and New York Giants.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
UFC 225: At the end of UFC 213, Yoel Romero was on his back when the injured Robert Whittaker put the final punches on Romero in unanimously outpointing him for the interim UFC middleweight championship.
Nearly 11 months later at UFC 225, Whittaker (20-4) will put his eight-fight winning streak on the line against Romero (13-2) in a scheduled five-round middleweight rematch at Chicago.
SOCCER
PREMIER LEAGUE: Kenny Dalglish, a former Liverpool player and manager, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for services to football, charity and the city of Liverpool.
Dalglish, 67, was the only sportsperson knighted in the Queen’s Birthday List. Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe and boxer Anthony Joshua also received honors.
WOMEN’S CUP: Italy qualified for the Women’s World Cup for the first time in two decades following a 3-0 victory against Portugal at Florence, Italy.
FIGURE SKATING
REFORMS PASSED: The International Skating Union passed a series of technical reforms, among them limiting the number of high-scoring quad jumps in individual free skates.
The quad jump came under intense scrutiny during the Olympics, where men’s skaters who packed the most into their program finished atop the medal standings. Even skaters who didn’t land them cleanly often were awarded more points than those who didn’t try them.
