GORHAM — The No. 7 Thornton Academy girls tennis team pulled off an upset on Thursday afternoon as the Golden Trojans earned a 3-2 win over No. 2 Gorham in the Class A South quarterfinals.
Gorham’s Jocelyn Bolt took down TA’s Emma Nassif 6-4, 6-4 at first singles, but the Trojans would take the other two singles bouts.
Thornton’s Cordelia Perry earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gorham’s Sarah McKnight at second singles, while Brianna Paul was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Hannah Dimick at third singles.
The Trojans’ first doubles team of Vivian Reyes and Claudia Martin Olea clinched the match for TA with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Saroise Herlihy and Madison Firmin.
Gorham would pick up a win at second doubles, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the upset.
TA will face No. 6 Portland in the regional semifinals on Saturday.
No. 5 Scarborough 3, No. 4 Kennebunk/Wells 2
The host Rams would win the first two singles matches in Thursday’s quarterfinals showdown, but Scarborough scored the upset by taking the other three bouts.
Kennebunk/Wells’ Grace Campanella was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at first singles and Rosemary Campanella picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles.
Scarborough’s Grace DeGrinney took down Amelia Nelson 6-1, 6-1 at third singles and the Red Storm took both doubles matches.
BOYS TENNIS
Class A South Quarterfinals
No. 5 Thornton Academy 3, No. 4 Westbrook 2
Caleb Richard earned a big win at first singles and TA swept the doubles matches to lead the Trojans to the playoff win.
Richard was a 6-1, 6-2 over Westbrook’s Garrett Sanders. The Blue Blazes got singles wins from Landon Sjoberg and Dylan Ho.
TA’s Asher Thompson and Jack Cannon rolled to a win at first doubles, and Adam Charbonneau and Charles Qu closed things out with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory at second doubles.
The Trojans will face No. 1 Falmouth in the regional semifinals on Saturday.
No. 3 Kennebunk/Wells 4, No. 6 Windham 1
Kennebunk/Wells swept the singles matches as the Rams advanced to the regional semifinals.
Declan Archer, Dan Behrens and Mason Burke all won singles bouts for the Rams.
Kenenbunk/Wells’ Tom Zub and Jack Gurski picked up a win at second doubles.
The Rams will face No. 2 Portland on Saturday.
