I take strong exception to Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Zak Ringelstein’s characterization of U.S. Sen. Angus King in his letter published May 14.

Sen. King votes as his conscience dictates and in the best interests of his constituents. He is not an ideologue. Congress is as dysfunctional as it is today because of ideologues, whether left-wing or right-wing.

Mr. Ringelstein implies that Sen. King should consistently support a single political philosophy rather than bipartisan partnerships. Sen. King acts under the old-fashioned notion that compromise and bipartisan cooperation serve the citizens of this country best.

If Mr. Ringelstein disagrees with that concept, then he has no real understanding of governance or leadership, and should be soundly rejected by the voters if he should win the nomination he seeks.
