FREEPORT — Freeport scored four runs in the fifth inning to beat Yarmouth 4-2 in a Western Maine Conference baseball game Wednesday.
The rally started with consecutive hit batters. Finn Johnston tied the game with a double to the left-center gap, driving home Gabe Wagner and Caleb Salter.
Liam Holt, running for Johnston, scored the go-ahead run on a steal of home while Shea Wagner was caught in a rundown after being picked off first by Yarmouth pitcher Luke Waeldner. Wagner was safe at second on the play and scored when his older brother, Colby, beat out an infield dribbler in front of the plate and Waeldner threw the ball into right field.
Freeport (8-3) won its fourth straight game. Yarmouth (6-4) had won its previous three games.
“This year, aggressiveness on the base paths has been key for us. It’s really been the difference in some games,” said Freeport Coach Bill Ridge. “That’s something that Yarmouth has done to us in the past, just to be relentless, and it’s tough to just continue to make those plays over and over, and we got a couple of breaks in that inning.”
