GORHAM — Grace McGouldrick found out quickly what was working and never let up Monday, pitching a no-hitter as Gorham defeated Cheverus/North Yarmouth Academy 13-0 at Robie Field in an SMAA game halted after the top of the fifth because of softball’s 12-run rule.
McGouldrick struck out 11 and walked two for the Rams (9-3). She faced only 16 batters; catcher Emma Shields picked a runner off third.
“I was hitting my spots really good today,” said McGouldrick, who has received a scholarship to play at the University of Maine. “And when I’d get two strikes on them, switching the height, the level of the pitch, really worked. Letter-high fastballs were really effective. Once we figured it out, we said keep doing it because it’s working. And our defense, too, made every play that came to us. It couldn’t have been any better.”
McGouldrick also helped with three hits (two triples), two RBI and two runs. Third baseman Kiana Tracey drove in four runs with a double and home run, scoring three times.
McGouldrick had an RBI single in the first and scored on a double by Shay Harris. The Rams then scored eight runs in the second, aided by four walks and two hit batters by Cheverus (3-8).
