Regardless of the result, the Wiscasset High School softball team has been competing to the end of games this season.
Coach Gordon Campbell is proud of the way his team has battled against talented teams. The Wolverines tallied 15 runs in a loss Monday against 5- 2 Lisbon. Campbell believed Wednesday’s matchup with Mountain Valley might be an even matchup, but the Wiscasset offense exploded for 13 hits in a 13-2 Mountain Valley Conference victory.
“It’s a confidence booster for our kids,” said Campbell. “Hopefully we can build off of this. We played Lisbon earlier in the week and pushed them to seven innings.”
The Wolverines slowly chipped away at Falcons starter Audra Bean through the early innings. Wiscasset held a 4-1 lead after three innings before breaking the game open in the fourth. The Wolverines took advantage of a pair of walks as Farrah Casey and Sydnie Thayer had timely singles to bring the runs home. They followed that up with a six-run, six-hit fifth inning.
Wiscasset starter August Moore worked around some trouble to earn the complete-game win. The Falcons had a two-out, bases-loaded opportunity in the fourth inning, but Moore was able to force a line out to the shortstop. In seven innings, Moore allowed seven hits, and two runs, with four strikeouts and four walks.
“A few times we had players on base but we just left them there,” said Mountain Valley Coach Lisa Russell. “We left the bases loaded in the fourth inning, and two on in the third we couldn’t get them in.”
The Wolverines struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first. After a Lindsey Gordon leadoff walk, Kelsey Jones brought her home with a triple to the center-field fence. Casey later singled Jones home for her first of four runs batted in.
After adding a run apiece in the second and third inning, the Wolverines put the game out of reach in the following innings. Bean walked a pair of Wolverines with one out in the fourth. Thayer lined a single to left to bring home the first run. Casey went the opposite way to right to score two more.
In the fifth, Maeve Blodgett cracked a RBI single to get the scoring started for the Wolverines. Jones followed that up with a two-run double that sailed to the left-field fence. Casey ended the day 4-for-4 at the plate with another RBI single in the inning.
“I told her before the game she was a good player,” said Campbell. “Last year, she hit the ball quite a bit. I talked to her before and I said you’re due.”
“I feel like it was about time,” said Casey.
Mountain Valley threatened in the third and fourth inning, but failed to come up with a hit for a big inning. Taylor Henry led off the third with a single. She later scored when Bean laced a double down the third-base line. The Falcons were unable to add any more runs in the inning, stranding Bean in scoring position.
Bella Simmons and Kendall Petrie started the fifth inning with walks. Simmons later scored on a ground out by Henry. With the score at 4-1, Mountain Valley loaded the bases in the inning. However, Moore shut the door by getting a line drive out hit right at the shortstop Thayer.
“They struggled hitting the ball tonight, but I’m proud of them,” said Russell. “They got to seven innings tonight, and we had very minimal errors in the field.”
Moore settled down after the middle innings. Over the final three frames, she allowed just one Falcon base runner. The Wolverines improved to 2-7 on the season, while Mountain Valley fell to 0-8. Campbell was happy to see his team score double-digit runs for the second time in a week, and he’s happy with the direction of his team and program.
“The kids are being patient at the plate and taking walks when they’re there,” said Campbell. “ In the past, we’d come into the season and expect to compete with Boothbay because they’re our talent level. Now we’re competing with other teams, which is a big confidence booster.”
