A Jeep rear-ended an MSAD 51 school bus Wednesday afternoon in North Yarmouth but no one was injured, the school said.

Superintendent Jeff Porter said bus No. 16 was stopped to let off students when a vehicle slammed into the back of it around 2 p.m., following an early dismissal of students.

The impact caused significant damage to the Jeep that struck the bus, but everyone was OK, Porter said.

There were about 15 students from both Greely middle and high schools on board at the time of the crash. Porter said the bus’s mandated safety devices and lights, including the pop-out stop sign that reminds other drivers to stop, were fully functional at the time.

Porter did not know the identity of the driver who struck the bus, and said a deputy from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office handled the crash.

It was unknown whether anyone was cited because of the crash. A message for the sheriff’s office was not immediately returned.
