A Portland High School sophomore is in the running for a $30,000 college scholarship after being selected as the Maine state winner of the “Doodle 4 Google” contest, officials said Monday.
Will Gordon won with a nature-inspired drawing of the word “Google” made out of trees under a starlit night sky. As one of 53 state and U.S. territory finalists, Gordon received a Chromebook and a Google bag and T-shirt.
He also is a finalist for the final five winners, selected with online votes. Google executives select the top winner from the final five.
The final top winner gets a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 in technology for his or her school. The four runners-up each get $5,000 college scholarships, and a trip to Google headquarters in California.
“I definitely felt like I put my best foot forward,” said Gordon, who recently transferred from Cheverus High School to Portland High School to take advantage of its art program. He is currently working on a children’s book, about a bear trying to get honey, that teaches young readers about the “try, try again” philosophy.
