On April 28, at Scarborough High School, Maine youth from several area high schools came together to host the inaugural Maine Youth Environmental Convention.

There may be a lack of leadership on environmental issues at some levels of government, but no lack of leadership with these teens, who organized a lively and useful conference with environmental exhibits, presentations, demonstrations and activities, including composting and environmental art.

The Maine Youth Environmental Association, which organized the convention, seeks to connect environmental clubs from schools across the state. One of the accomplishments of the conference was the opportunity for members of these clubs and their advisers to share about their experience with different environmental projects and what has worked best in educating and motivating peers.

Maine can be proud of the efforts of these young environmental leaders, and we can be confident that going forward that Maine youth will play an important role protecting Maine’s environment.
