WATERBORO — Both the Massabesic and Yarmouth girls’ lacrosse teams entered last year’s playoffs undefeated. In Friday night’s crossover game between the Class A and B powers, somebody’s regular-season winning streak had to end.

Led by Madison Drain and Morgan Pike, Massabesic, the defending Class A champ, proved too much for Yarmouth, the Class B runner-up in 2017.

Massabesic opened a four-goal halftime lead and remained in front the rest of the way for an 11-7 victory.

“Both teams played their style of game, and it ended up being a matchup that created some electricity out here tonight,” Massabesic Coach Brooks Bowen said. “It’s a tough schedule anyway, but to come away with this win – we know that’s going to be worth some Heal points down the stretch.”

Pike led the Mustangs (2-0) with four goals and two assists, and Drain scored twice with four assists. Also for Massabesic, Skylar Renaud had three goals, and Cailyn Forrester and Logan Champlin each scored once.

Emma Marsten led the Clippers with four goals. Ehryn Groothoof, Greta Elder and Meredith Lane also scored.

“Our offense connected very well today,” Drain said. “I think our defense definitely helped us out a lot with getting the ball up to the offense.”

Lydia Wasina of Massabesic and Izzy Serrano of Yarmouth finished with five saves each.

Yarmouth had answers for Massabesic’s first two goals. After Drain stole the ball in the Clippers’ zone and converted 2:45 into the game, Marston tied it three minutes later.

With 13:04 left in the half, Renaud scored for Massabesic from Alexis Kidder, who fed her the ball from behind the net. Marston tied the score again less than two minutes later, but it was the last time the Clippers would pull even.

To take the lead for good, Drain found Pike cutting up the middle toward the goal, and Pike placed a shot in the bottom left corner of the net. Drain and Pike scored again to put the Mustangs up 5-2 before Lane scored for Yarmouth with 4:23 left in the opening period. Pike and Forrester added unanswered goals for Massabesic before halftime.

“We were really focusing on making meaningful cuts,” Pike said. “We stayed poised and tried to finish every play we could.”

Down four goals, the Clippers wasted no time getting to work in the second half. After Lane won the faceoff, Marston took 18 seconds to score. But Champlin kicked off a three-goal run for Massabesic, taking the ball down the field by herself before burying her shot. Pike and Renaud scored the next two for the Mustangs.

Elder scored from Lane to cut Massabesic’s lead to 10-5 with 12:23 left before the Mustangs connected a string of passes that resulted in their final goal. Abigail Chaves carried the ball down the field and fed Pike in the right corner before Pike crossed the ball to Renaud, who scored for the third time.

Marston and Groothoff added goals for Yarmouth in the final minutes.
