The Rams totaled 12 hits and drew eight walks on the day, while also holding the Spartans to just two hits.
“We got some base runners on against Noble but couldn’t move them around, we really earned the base runners (against Massabesic) and got enough around but left a ton on base, so we tried to build on that and we tried to produce and get baserunners every inning and not just get them on and do nothing,” said Kennebunk coach Kortney Nedeau of her team’s offensive performance after the win.
Kennebunk got off to a fast start by taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Zoe Novicki hit a two-run double while Sydney Waitt knocked in another run on a groundout. Another run was walked in during the inning.
The Rams’ biggest inning came in the second where they put up six more runs to extend the lead to 10-0. Britney Gregoire and Lydia Howarth each hit two-run doubles while Olivia Cox added an RBI single. Novicki added another run on a groundout.
Lindsey Gregoire and Howarth each knocked in runs in the third inning, followed by RBIs from Emily Hogue and Christine Jarowicz in the fourth to set the score to 14-0.
Waitt got the win for Kennebunk in the circle, going four innings and allowing two hits while striking out two. Marli Wilson started for Sanford, pitching two innings and picking up a strikeout. Grace Curly pitched in relief and added a strikeout.
“(Kennebunk was) on today, they played super good softball so hats off to them. We’re young, sometimes we get a little hesitant when we play and we need to get better at that. When you step on the field your grade goes away, we need to get better,” said Sanford coach Mike Bailey of his team’s loss.
The Rams improve to 2-1 on the year. Nedeau has been proud of her team’s play in the early going, and its transition to the Southwestern Maine Activities Association.
“We’ve seen three different types of pitching, we’ve played three completely different offenses, three completely different defenses. Being in a new league they have to come in aggressive right away. We don’t know who we’re playing so they have to hop right on, nothing to lose,” said Nedeau.
As a team that has been rebuilding in the past few seasons, Nedeau believes her club is beginning to hit its stride this spring.
“We’re getting to a good place. The senior class is really strong and they’re really versatile, we’ve grown one or two freshman a year that have really blended well with that class,” said Nedeau. “They’ve sort of grown up together … they go out there with the mentality of nothing to lose.”
