Police in York County detonated a suspicious package found on the side of the road that turned out to be a bottle full of used syringes.

A person traveling on the 800 block of Main Street in Waterboro Monday evening called York County sheriff’s deputies to report finding a needle and bottle wrapped in duct tape on the shoulder of the road that they feared was a homemade explosive device.

This is the duct-taped bottle that was found on Main Street in Waterboro Monday and reported to police.

Deputies were unable to distinguish what was in the wrapped bottle and, as a precaution, called the Maine State Police bomb squad, said Sheriff Bill King. The bomb squad detonated the bottle and found it contained used syringes and caps.

The Waterboro Fire Department cleaned up and disposed of the hazardous material, King said. Anyone with information about the origin of the duct tape-wrapped bottle is asked to contact the sheriff’s office.
