If the solution that Alan Caron recommends (March 23) to fix the so-called “spoiler” problem in the Maine governor’s race had been applied to the 2016 presidential race (the exit by mid-October of candidates with dim prospects for victory), Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump, would now be president – a happening not devoutly to be contemplated.

And going back to 1948, Republican Thomas Dewey would have been elected president, not Democrat Harry Truman.

If pollsters can be wrong in predicting the likely winners of presidential elections, they can be just as wrong in predicting the winners and also-rans in gubernatorial elections.

What’s the harm in leaving the present election-contest system in place? Let the chips fall where they may.
