Martin put up career-best numbers all around and cemented her place as one of the state’s premiere players. She has received many honors since the season’s end, including being named the Southwestern Maine Activities Association’s Class A Player of the Year.
Martin thanked Biddeford coach Katie Herbine, as well as her teammates for her development as a player.
“Well last year was a little bit of a new start with (Herbine), and we love her. She has done so much for the program and I think this year the ball got rolling. We came together as a team and (worked hard) which helped my personal success as well as the team’s success,” said Martin.
As a junior, Martin was also called upon to be the team’s leader both on and off the court. Martin relished the role, and feels that the added responsibility will help her down the road.
“It’s challenging at points but I know it’s good for me in the long run, especially for college ball since I know it will make me a stronger person and have stronger character. It’s a lot to ask from me at times but I wouldn’t want to be in any other position,” said Martin.
The Tigers finished the season with a 5-13 record, which was more wins than previous two years. Martin believes that the rebuilding Tigers will continue to improve next season, and hopes to see them qualify for the postseason.
“I think we can definitely make the playoffs next year. I’m not saying a state championship, but I feel like we can get a playoff spot,” said Martin. “I just think it has to do with getting in workouts over the summer. Our coaches are still new so we still have a whole new offense so (learning) that will be a big factor. We just so close as a team too, that will also be a factor.”
Martin also hopes to finish her Biddeford career out strong. Although there will be many possible milestones on the table, such as her 1,000th career point, she will be more focused on helping the team win as many games as possible and being a leader.
“Just staying positive, even if we’re losing just staying positive and keeping a good attitude … just helping lead us to the playoffs,” said Martin of her goals next year. “I think in my second game I can get 1,000 (career) points which will be a great accomplishment but I’m not shooting for any awards, I’m just going to play.”
Although Martin has a team-first attitude, she does appreciate the recognition she has been given for her performance.
“I’m not huge into awards and stuff, I just like to play. But it is nice to be rewarded when you’re playing so hard, it means a lot.”
