GORHAM — Sophomore Erin Martin of the University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team has been selected as the Little East Conference Player of the Week for the week ending March 25.

The Biddeford native is the second Huskies softball player to earn weekly honors from the LEC, joining teammate freshman Hannah Kenney, who was named the LEC Rookie of the Week on March 19.

Martin was outstanding offensively last week, helping Southern Maine to a pair of wins over MCLA and Elmhurst College. In an 8-0 (6 inning) win over MCLA, Martin drove in a pair of runs on a 1-for-4 effort at the plate. One of three Huskies’ to hit for extra bases in the win, Martin collected both of her RBIs with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth as part of a five-run inning for the Huskies.

In Southern Maine’s 8-5 victory over Elmhurst College, Martin drove in five of the Huskies’ eight runs, tying for second in USM’s single-game records for RBIs. Against the Bluejays, Martin was 3-for-5 at the plate with a triple. Martin smacked a bases-clearing two-out triple down the right field line to drive in the Huskies first three runs of the game, and then drove in another two runs in the bottom of the fifth with a single through the right side.

Through 12 games this season, Martin is hitting a solid .390 (16-for-41) from the lead off spot with 10 RBI, and 11 runs scored. She has four doubles and a triple for a .537 slugging percentage, and a .432 on-base percentage.

Riding a two-game win streak, Southern Maine is scheduled to open the Little East Conference portion of its schedule at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday for a doubleheader.
