PORTLAND — The Maine Red Claws (17-31) will play their last home game of the season on Thursday at 7 PM in the Portland Expo, hoping to end their eight game losing streak. Maine has gone 1-16, since January 28, when they stood 16-15 and in playoff contention.
Despite a team single game scoring record 57 points from Trey Davis, Maine lost 129-126 in their last outing to the Lakeland Magic (25-22) on Sunday in front of a sold-out home crowd. The previous Red Claws single game record of 52 points was set by Kenny Hayes in 2012. The 6-foot-tall Davis had 23 points at halftime and 17 points in both the third and fourth quarters. He hit 10-of-14 three point shots and was 13-of-14 from the foul line. Davis also had eight assists on route to his fourth 30-plus point game of the season, and is among the team leaders in several categories including scoring (16.0), assists (4.6) and free throw percentage (87.2). The 2016 UMass graduate is a rookie, having played last year in just 3 games in Europe and one game for Canton in the G-League.
The Red Claws close out their home schedule Thursday night against the Long Island Nets (26-21), who have a one-game lead over Lakeland for the sixth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The matchup will feature Davis against the Nets’ Isaiah Whitehead, who had previously owned the season’s highest scoring game with 52 points. A 6-foot-3 rookie from Seton Hall, Whitehead is averaging 20.6 points a contest.
After Thursday’s game, the Red Claws will finish the season on Saturday in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada against the playoff bound Raptors 905 (30-17)
