Portland police are still working to notify the family of a man killed on Congress Street early Saturday morning when he was struck by a city-owned dump truck hauling snow. The 58-year-old man had previous contact with the city’s homeless shelter system, said Jessica Grondin, the city’s director of communications.
Police are continuing to look for his relatives, Grondin said.
The police traffic unit is investigating the death. The driver of the white 2005 Sterling dump truck was identified as Donald Penney, 49, of South Portland, a city employee. Penney has been placed on paid administrative leave because of the traumatic nature of the incident, Grondin said.
The accident occurred at 2282 Congress St. near Blueberry Lane, and close to the city’s snow dumping site on District Road, police said. The man was walking along Congress Street when he was struck at 3:46 a.m.
