A 58-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed on outer Congress Street at 3:46 a.m. Saturday by a city-owned commercial vehicle, shutting down Congress Street in both directions for more than five hours.

The accident occurred near the Irving gas station and Rusty Lantern market at 2282 Congress St., at the intersection with Blueberry Road and close to the Maine Turnpike overpass.

A white 2005 Sterling dump truck carrying a load of snow and driven by Donald Penney, 49, of South Portland struck the man, the Portland Police Department said in a news release.

Penney is a city employee. The pedestrian’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Traffic was turned around by police while they investigated the cause of the accident. The road reopened about 9:15 a.m.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call them at 874-8532 or 874-8575.
