HARTFORD, Conn. — Zack Hale and Spencer Hewson scored second-period goals and Cam MacDonald added two goals in the third period as Colby won its first New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s hockey championship with a 4-1 victory Sunday over Trinity.

The sixth-seeded Mules (15-10-2) took a 2-0 lead on the goals by Hale and Hewson early in the second period.

Top-seeded Trinity (19-6-2), the defending championship, cut into the lead early in the third, but MacDonald answered just 13 seconds later. He added an empty-net goal at 18:48.

Sean Lawrence made 38 saves for Colby, which earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which starts Saturday. Pairings will be announced Monday.

BASEBALL

MIAMI 7, MAINE 1: Willy Escala tripled home two runs to give the Hurricanes (5-6) a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, and Miami added four run in the fifth against the Black Bears (3-8) in Coral Gables, Florida.

Colin Ridley singled home Jonathan Bennett in the top of the first for Maine’s run. Brandon Vicens had a double and a triple and drew three walks for the Black Bears, who lost to the Hurricanes 7-6 in 15 innings Saturday night after winning the series opener Friday.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS KING’S COLLEGE: Zach Begin threw a shut out in the nightcap as the Monks opened their season with two wins over King’s College (0-2), beating the Monarchs 10-6 and 2-0 in Winter Haven, Florida.

Begin struck out 12 while allowing just two hits. Anthony DiPrizio scored on groundout in the third inning and doubled home Ben Gravel in the sixth.

Joey Murphy had two RBI and scored three runs in the opener.

SOFTBALL

NEBRASKA-OMAHA 4, MAINE 2: Maddie Decker hit a home run in the second inning and doubled home Laurine German in the sixth, but the Black Bears (4-6) lost to the Mavericks (9-11) in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

ST. JOSEPH’S LOSES TWICE: Kaylee Burns drove in two runs and scored the other for St. Joseph’s in a season-opening 7-3 loss to Bridgewater (Va.) College in Kissimmee, Florida.

The Monks also lost 15-2 to Muskingum in a five-inning game. Libby Pomerleau stole home for the Monks’ first run.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BOWDOIN: The Polar Bears (26-2) will travel to Pennsylvania to face Scranton (28-1) in the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Bowdoin-Scranton winner will play Tufts or Messiah on Saturday, also in Scranton, for a spot in the national semifinals.

(1) UCONN 82, TULANE 56: Katie Lou Samuelson scored 21 points to lead the Huskies (30-0) past the Green Wave (14-17) in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament in Uncasville, Connecticut.

(8) SOUTH CAROLINA 62, (2) MISSISSIPPI STATE 51: A’ja Wilson scored 16 points and South Carolina (26-6) became the first Southeastern Conference women’s program to win four consecutive tournament titles, snapping the nation’s longest winning streak at 32 with a win over the Bulldogs (32-1) in Nashville, Tennessee.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(15) MICHIGAN 75, (8) PURDUE 66: Zavier Simpson was a catalyst on both ends of the floor, finishing with 10 points, five assists and five rebounds as Michigan (28-7) beat Purdue (28-6) in New York to repeat as Big Ten tournament champions.
