The clubs were tied 18-18 at half, and Wells took a slim 26-25 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors went on to have their best quarter, outpacing the Wildcats 11-6, making key shots down the stretch and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line to close out the win.
“Tied at 29 late in the fourth, I thought our execution and our free throws down the stretch gave us some separation and helped us win the game,” said Wells coach Don Abbott after the win. “There’s a lot of emotion, it’s senior night, a rivalry game. We beat them down there and I think the girls were motivated to put an exclamation mark on that, make sure they legitimize that victory by following it up with another one tonight.”Franny Ramsdell led the Warriors with 14 points on the day while Meg Schneider added 12. Julia Babcock led the Wildcats with nine points while Nina Howe scored eight.
Abbott was happy to see his team finish the regular season off strong, and to see his seniors get one last win at home.
“We got some contributions from a lot of people. I felt like it was a good quality team win,” said Abbott. “It’s nice to see them step up and finish, I’ve got six great seniors that have done so much to this school and this community and it means a lot to them.”
The Warriors will look ahead to the Class B South playoffs for another year. Abbott feels like his team’s tough schedule has helped prepared it to make a run in the postseason.
“The Western Maine Conference is a war every single night. I think that what it’s done is that it’s got us ready for the tournament. Wins or losses, you know in our conference you’re going to be in for a battle,” said Abbott. “I don’t know exactly who (we’ll face) but the girls are ready, playing in this league for 18 nights gets you tournament-ready.”
The Warriors will enter the tournament on a hot streak, winning five of their last six contests. Abbott like’s his team’s heart heading on to the big stage.
“You want to be peaking at the end of the year and playing your best basketball,” said Abbott. “We’re ready, we’ll show up and do our best. These girls have a lot of fight in them.”
