Now through Feb. 18, the Theater Project Professional Ensemble is staging a production of “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” by Oscar Wilde and adapted by Merlin Holland and John O’Connor.
Set in the decadent world of Victorian London, a beautiful young man named Dorian Gray becomes infatuated by the exquisite portrait that artist Basil Hallward has painted of him and makes a Faustian pact enabling him to pursue a never-ending life of hedonism and debauchery, while the painting records every sin. Oscar Wilde’s only novel caused an immediate scandal when it was first published in 1890 and its themes of youth and decay, innocence and corruption, art and reality are even more relevant to us in the 21st century than in the 19th.
Directed by Al Miller, the production features performances by Thomas Ian Campbell as Dorian Gray, Andrew Elijah Edwards as Basil Hallward, Tom Handel as Lord Henry Wotton, Catherine Buxton as Lady Agatha, and Anna Mikuková as Sibyl Vane. Technical direction and scenic/lighting design by by JP Gagnon, costumes by Jessie Eastman Perry, and sound design by Jen Roe.
The run of “ Dorian Gray” includes several special events, including an art show in the theater lobby, a talk-back with consultant Nina Roth- Wells, and a dinner/theater collaboration with Taverna Khione (located at 25 Mill St. in Brunswick). Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, and 2 p.m. Sundays. All tickets are Pay-What-You- Want, with a suggested price of $18.
