Chelsea Roy’s quest for love on national TV came to an end Monday night.
The 29-year-old South Portland woman was sent home on the sixth episode of the season of ABC’s reality dating show “The Bachelor.” The show’s star, bachelor Arie Luyendyk, chose not to give Roy a rose at the end of the two-hour episode, meaning her time on the show had ended. She was one of three contestants sent home during the episode.
Roy, a single mother who works in real estate, had made quite an impression on fans of the show and TV critics in the season’s first episode on Jan. 1. Bloggers and columnists immediately labeled her this season’s “villain” because of her aggressive behavior.
She was the first woman to kiss Luyendyk on the show and the first to get a rose from him, the so-called “first impression rose.”

On the second episode, she drew the ire of other contestants when she quickly swept Luyendyk away from a cocktail party for some one-on-one time — what another woman deemed “classic Chelsea” — so she could tell him that she has a son. When she returned, others took issue with her devaluing the sacrifices they have made to be on the show.
Monday’s episode showed Luyendyk and the women traveling to Paris, where he spent time with several of them individually.
Each week the bachelor on “The Bachelor” gives roses to the women he wants to keep getting to know, and the others go home. The season started with 29 bachelorettes and now seven are left. At the end of the season, Luyendyk has to pick one woman, either to continue dating or to get engaged.
The episodes Roy was featured on were filmed last fall, between September and November.
Roy is the not the first Maine woman to be on the show. Madawaska native Ashley Hebert was a runner-up on “The Bachelor,” in 2011 then starred in ABC’s spin-off show, “The Bachelorette.” She ended up marrying J.P. Rosenbaum in 2012. The wedding was filmed and shown on ABC. Today, she and Rosenbaum have two children.
