TRACK AND FIELD

Sanford native Rachel Schneider won two events Saturday at the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Schneider, 26, had planned to defend her title in the women’s elite mile at the flat, 200-meter track. On race day she added the women’s 3,000 meters.

Schneider, 26, who competes for Under Armour, won the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes, 2.6 seconds, and came back with a short recovery to win the mile by 4.3 seconds in 4:31.7.

On her Instagram account, Schneider wrote: “Decided to do the 3k/Mile double (25 minutes between each) and was really happy to be able to practice some strategic race execution and run away with both wins.”

The 3,000 field was filled mostly with collegiate runners. Schneider won by over 7 seconds.

In the women’s elite mile, Schneider was followed by three professional runners: 2016 US indoor 1,500-meter runner-up Cory McGee (4:36.1), 2016 U.S. Olympic steeplechaser Erin Teschuk (4:37:05) and Schneider’s former Georgetown University teammate Katrina Coogan (4:37.51).

The winning time was relatively slow for Schneider, who has a personal best of 4:25 and ran 4:27.5 the previous week while finishing second in New York City.

Schneider is preparing for the U.S. Indoor Championship 1,500 meters on Feb. 18 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Police said that it’s believed that one victim was a ride-sharing operator who was transporting Jackson when Jackson became ill. The driver pulled over and got out to help Jackson when both were struck by a pickup truck. The pickup’s driver, a 37-year-old Indianapolis man, tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. The man was believed to be intoxicated and was driving without a license, police said.
