BRUNSWICK

Kicking off last Sunday, students from St. John’s Catholic School have been celebrating Catholic Schools Week with different activities each day.

The celebration kicked off with an open house, featuring students’ work on display, as well as an opportunity for new families to check out our school.

The following day, students wore red, white and blue for “Nation Day” and participated in an all-school Spelling Bee, where the Andersen brothers battled for the win. Fifth grader Braden came in in second place, while his brother, second grader Preston, took first. Students also created a large banner, and wrote letters and cards to give thanks to U.S. military members and veterans. Principal Tim Forti talked to each grade about his service in the Army and brought in some military paraphernalia for students to see.

St. John’s hosted “Career Day” on Tuesday, where several professionals from Brunswick visited classrooms to speak to students about their jobs. Visitors included police and fire personnel, a reporter, a chef, a veterinarian, a doctor, a dog trainer, a photographer, an author, and tennis coach.

Chris Geer, chef at Tuscan Bistro and St. John’s alum said he “loved coming in.”

“I graduated from St. John’s in 1997. It’s nice to see that not much has changed,” he said. “The kids were receptive.”

On Wednesday, “Vocations Day” began with parents cooking up a delicious breakfast for faculty and staff filled with homemade goodies such as quiche and scones. Sister Angela, a name that means so much to so many, stopped by the school for a visit, as well. She and many others enjoyed a Religion Trivia Game, which included honored guests Father Murphy, Father Ford and Father Lupo. The Parish priests partnered with eighth grade students Cialy Charbonneau, Justina Gillman and Kassidi Sullivan. Congratulations to Father Ford and Justina Gillman for coming in first place!

“They asked me all questions I knew,” joked Father Ford.

Other events that took place during the week were an alumni/teacher basketball game with the SJCS concert band playing, students wrote letters to local businesses, collected nonperishable items for Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, played Bingo, took part in “Drop Everything and Read,” a photo booth and a family Mass.

The week was scheduled to end with a talent variety show tonight in the St. John’s Parish Hall.
