The Stags led 2-0 heading into the third period, and would explode for five goals to secure the win.
Abby Lamontagne continued her stellar season for the Stags, as she led the way with four goals and an assist on Thursday.
“She’s the engine that drives the train. When she gets going, gets her legs moving, it really creates a lot of space and opportunities for the rest of the team,” said Cheverus/Kennebunk coach Scott Rousseau.
Lamontagne would get the Stags on the board with a goal less than two minutes into play, then add another toward the end of the first period to make it 2-0.
The Tigers would tighten things up in the second, holding the Stags scoreless while also killing off two penalties.
“(Biddeford/TA/Wells) didn’t make it easy for us, they got a great performance in goal. We were territorially dominant but they packed it in front of (the net) and played to their strengths. I think scoring so quick put us in too relaxed of a state. We had two powerplays in the second period that were duds and that gave them some momentum,” said Rousseau.
Lucia Pompeo would make it 3-0 on a goal less than three minutes into the third, and Lamontagne would secure the hat trick just over a minute later to extend the Cheverus/Kennebunk lead to 4-0.
Biddeford/TA/Wells’ Alaina Keely would put the Tigers on the board with 8:17 remaining, but the Stags would respond by getting two more goals in the next minute from Lamontagne and Caitlin Wolff. Wolff would add one more with 4:12 remaining to set the score at 7-1 and close out the win.
“Although it wasn’t our best game I was proud of the girls. They stayed patient, didn’t get over-excited, and eventually created some opportunities. It wasn’t like we weren’t getting quality scoring chances, we were getting a lot of quality scoring chances. That third goal that Lucia scored calmed us down because that third goal makes a difference. It helped us relax,” said Rousseau.
The Stags improve to 13-1 on the year, and remain in sole possession of first place in the southern conference. The Stags will have a busy week to finish off the regular season, and Rousseau hopes to see his club continue to build on its success.
“We had exams last week and we haven’t practiced much in the last 10 days, which I think contributed to us missing a few at the end of our sticks and being a little sloppy,” said Rousseau. “We’re going to have five games in nine days, I’m looking forward to getting back to practice and getting some routine back into our schedule.”
