A classic production is being staged by Portland Players.
The theater company is presenting Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, “Our Town,” through Feb. 11.
The first play of the Portland Players 87th season, “Our Town,” is an enduring literary classic. Written in 1938, the play is narrated by a Stage Manager (Michael Donovan) and preformed with minimal props and set.
The setting is the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, in the early 1900s, a simpler time that, in many ways, is not so different than today. The play follows the lives of George Gibbs (Daniel Bullard), Emily Webb (Tara Golson), and their families (Allison McCann, Megan Bremermann, Jeff Campbell, Mark Snowden, Eliana Goodman, and CJ Marenghi) as they navigate the play’s three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity.”
The Portland Players’ production, directed by Charlie Marenghi, aims to breathe new life into this classic piece, while staying true to Wilder’s vision. It is a true study in humanity and you may find that you recognize yourself up there on the stage.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for senior citizens, and $15 for students and children.
There are a pair of specially designated performances during the run of shows. Sunday, Jan. 28, is Student Sunday, with all student/child tickets costing only $6. In addition, an American Sign Language-interpreted performance will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 4.
