The Warriors would open the game by going on a 14-0 run and would take an 18-5 lead after one quarter.
Wells continued to dominate on both ends and would surge to a 31-7 lead at halftime.
“We wanted to start fast. I talked to the girls pregame about wanting to do the things that we do well. We had goals to limit our turnovers and to get to the free throw line … get out and run in transition and get some easy baskets,” said Wells coach Don Abbott after the win. “We tried to control the glass, when you do those things it allows you to be able to play the way you want to play. We got some transition buckets and made a few shots and we kind of got them back on their heels a little bit.”
The Warriors wore down the Raiders with ball movement, consistently creating open looks and clear scoring lanes in the opening half. Wells had eight different players score in the first two quarters and nine score overall.
“We wanted each of our possessions to end in a quality field goal opportunity. If we do that, we have talented enough kids that we’re going to put the ball in the basket,” said Abbott. “We’ve been careless with the ball so that’s been a focus at practice, taking care of the basketball and getting good shots. Sharing the ball and moving the ball is a key part of that.”
Fryeburg had a better second half, and kept the point differential to just four to make up some ground in the later minutes.
“(Fryeburg) seemed to shoot the ball better. They switched it up to zone which naturally slows down your transition and slows down your rhythm. They made shots, they played hard and I was impressed,” said Abbott.
Franny Ramsdell led Wells with 14 points while Anya Chase added 11 and MacKenzie Foss 10.
The Warriors improve to 5-5 on the season, and will take on both Gray-New Gloucester and Kennebunk later this week. Abbott was happy to see his club rebound after the rough stretch.
“It’s good to get back — you have to play all 18 on the schedule and we had a couple that got away from us where we thought we had a chance to win,” said Abbott. “That’s our league, if you want to be among the top teams and in that conversation then you have to win those games. It was good tonight to get back on track.”
