NORTH BERWICK — The always rugged Noble Invitational was forced to go old school — literally — over the weekend as frozen pipes forced the annual wrestling tournament out of Noble High School and into Noble Middle School, which is the former high school.
Despite the change of location, the tournament went off without a hitch and brought the same entertaining, hard-nosed wrestling action.
Four local wrestlers would bring home individual championships with Noble’s Sam Martel, Sanford’s Sam Anderson and Wells’ Michael Wrigley and Nolan Potter all earning the top spot on the podium.
Martel picked up an impressive 12-6 win over Skowhegan standout Ricky Oberg in the 126-pound final.
Anderson won the 170-pound championship with a 15-5 major decision over Foxcroft Academy’s Elijah Ames.
Wrigley gave Wells its first title of the day when he pinned Messalonskee’s Austin Pelletier at the 1-minute mark of the 182-pound championship match.
At 220 pounds, Potter would win the title when he pinned Nokomis’ James Boyd in 4:26.
Wrigley and Potter helped the Warriors finish fourth in the team standings behind champion Nokomis, second-place Skowhegan and third-place Cony. Host Noble finished in fifth place. Sanford was 11th with Massabesic 12th and Kennebunk finishing in 17th place.
Noble had a pair of second-place finishers with Joe Pilecki falling to Skowhegan’s Samson Sirois in the 132-pound final, and John Grenier dropping the 145-pound title match to Camden Hills’ Noah Lang.
Sanford also had a second-place finisher as Nick Works made it to the finals at 285 pounds before falling to Tilton’s Eric Pilcher.
Kennebunk junior Alden Shields had a strong showing as he finished third at 113 pounds. The standout claimed the bronze with a pin of Camden Hills’ Dawson Allen in 4:54.
Massabesic freshman Noah Hernandez also finished third as he picked up a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Bonny Eagle’s Tyler Fitz in the 145-pound consolation final.
Josh Cote (126), Duncan McGilvery (138) and Hil Kiesker (160) all finished third for the host Knights. Sanford would get a third-place finish from Sol Demers at 220 pounds.
Massabesic sophomore Matthew Pooler came home with a fourth-place finish in a tough 152-pound weight class. Wells got a fourth-place finish from Sean McCormack-Kuhman at 285 pounds.
Kennebunk’s Alvaro Huezo Coto (160) and Wells’ Jonah Potter (182) and Morgan Welch-Thompson (195) would all finish in fifth place, while Kennebunk’s Chase Lamontagne (195), Massabesic’s Garrett Francoeur (120), Sanford’s Isaac Plante (182) and Wells’ Devin Bickford (138) and Drew Peters (170) finished in sixth place.
Other champions from the Noble tournament were Skowhegan’s Jake Craig (106), Lasalle Academy’s Andrew Fallon (113), Nokomis’ Josh Brown (120), Bonny Eagle’s Caleb Frost (138), Nokomis’ Quinton Richards (152) and David Wilson (160) and Cony’s Nic Mills.
