YORK COUNTY — The Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission has announced two new hires for the organization.

Abbie Sherwin has been introduced as SMPDC’s Land Use/Transportation Planner, succeeding Transportation Planner Jamel Torres.

Sherwin attended Wheaton College and earned a master’s degree in natural resources from the University of New Hampshire. She worked as a NOAA Coastal Management fellow for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry for two years and joins SMPDC from a position with the New Hampshire Floodplain Management Program.

She will start at SMPDC at the end of December and be working on transportation projects, comprehensive plans, the SMPDC coastal contract, community resiliency and a number of other projects. 

Torres has accepted a position as assistant planner position for Scarborough.

Ashleigh Tatarcyk also has joined SMPDC as a part-time community outreach specialist.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Maine in sustainable tourism and hospitality with a concentration in community development.

Tatarcyk has spent time in Cuba as a research assistant, studying Cuba’s tourism infrastructure while living aboard the Tall Ship “The Harvey Gamage.” She also worked for the Greater Portalnd Council of Governments, assisting with the Portland Food Launch and helping to organize other events.

In her new role with SMPDC, Tatarcyk will be helping SMPDC with its publications, meeting facilitations, website management and data collection and research. 

The Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission was founded in 1964, in response to an identified need for a coordinated effort for economic development and resource management. It has conducted economic development, environmental, land use and transportation planning and provided technical assistance to the municipalities in the region for more than 50 years. 

Formerly known as the Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission, the organization serves 39 communities and municipalities in York, southern Oxford and Cumberland counties, and York County itself.
