I am writing on behalf of Maine Medical Center, urging Portland residents to vote “no” on city Question 2 on Nov. 7.

We come to this recommendation following a year of comprehensive and extremely productive meetings with the city Planning Board and our neighbors regarding our proposed $512 million expansion. This engagement has resulted in a better plan that will better serve patients and Portland residents.

This expansion is desperately needed to better serve our patients and provide predictability for future MMC investments in Portland. Question 2 would supersede that process and could delay this project, which our patients and community desperately need.

Community engagement is important in planning for our future, as is the need for stakeholders to have a voice in the process. Our recent experience has demonstrated that together we can successfully use the processes the city has in place to work together to move our community forward, not backward.
