WELLS — Big plays early and a strong second half propelled the Wells football team past visiting Lisbon/ St. Dominic Academy 36-6 on Friday.

After a close first half in which Wells took a 14-6 lead, the Warriors would score 22 unanswered points in the second to put the Greyhounds away.

“It was  hard-fought battle and these guys keep coming at it. It was a good team win for us,” said Wells offensive coordinator Kevin Fox, who was filling in for head coach Tim Roche on Friday. “(Lisbon/St. Dom’s) came in strong and they’re a good team. We kind of knew what they wanted to do and we made a couple of adjustments. We keep coming, we keep coming and we try to wear teams down. I think that played a little bit of a factor.”

Wells got on the board late in the first when Jack Talevi took a jet sweep 49 yards for the score. The Greyhounds responded with just over four minutes remaining in the half with a 2-yard rush by quarterback Lucas Francis to cut the lead to 7-6.

The Warriors would strike with another big play, as Tyler Bridge rushed for a 62-yard score to extend the led to 14-6 at half.

Wells would catch fire in the second half, and quickly got a 45-yard touchdown reception from Peyton MacKay on a throw from quarterback Michael Wrigley.

Despite coming up with some big stops, the Greyhounds could not keep pace with Wells and it’s big plays.

“Well against a wing team you don’t want to get beat by passes. It’s tough enough to stop the run but anytime they’re passing for a (45-yard) touchdown it’s going to break your back a bit,” said Lisbon/St. Dom’s coach Chris Kates.

Nolan Potter would later score on a 9-yard rush in the fourth, followed by a successful 2-point conversion on a pass to Chad Fitzpatrick. Potter would cap the night off with a 4-yard rush late in the fourth to secure the 36-6 win.

Potter led Wells with 132 rushing yards while Bridge added 82. Wrigley finished the day with 85 yards passing.

Isaiah Thompson led the Greyhounds with 37 yards rushing, while Henry Doyle hauled in all of Lisbon/St. Dom’s 97 yards through the air.

“We had a couple of drives where I thought we were going to get a little momentum but we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. We did some things well but we didn’t do enough things well to beat a team like this,” said Kates.

The Warriors remain perfect at 7-0, and Fox has been impressed with the team’s toughness, especially facing a new conference in Class D.

“It’s a pretty competitive league, we’ve had some of the toughest games we’ve had in quite a long time,” said Fox. “Being a successful program it obviously puts a target on your back so a lot of props to these kids, they rise to that challenge. It’s a lot of work for us.”

The Greyhounds fall to 6-1 on the year, and Kates hops his team will rebound next week.

“Short memory — you need to have a short memory on weeks like this,” said Kates. “That’s football, you take your lumps some weeks and you have to recover the next week and hopefully get back on the winning track.”
