And we are down to two.
That’s two undefeated teams in the Journal Tribune coverage area as Thornton Academy fell to defending state champion Bonny Eagle last Saturday.
With TA’s 49-14 loss to Bonny Eagle, the only two unbeatens remaining are Kennebunk in Class B and Wells in Class D.
Kennebunk rolled to a 35-0 win over a rebuilding Brunswick team, which beat the Rams in last year’s state finals. The Wells Warriors picked up a 41-21 road win over Oak Hill to keep their perfect season alive.
While the Warriors have certainly been impressive this season, it’s the Rams that are on top of our rankings heading into Week 6.
1. Kennebunk
(5-0, at Mt. Ararat tonight)
The Rams seem to be peaking as the regular season heads down the backstretch. Kennebunk will be a heavy favorite tonight at Mt. Ararat.
2. Wells
(5-0, at Yarmouth tonight)
Over the last three weeks, the Warriors won a 7-point game vs. Cape Elizabeth, rallied for a 25-21 win over Madison/Carrabec and picked up a 41-21 win over Oak Hill. Look for Wells to really take it to winless Yarmouth tonight.
3. Thornton Academy (4-1, at Oxford Hills/Buckfield)
We really feel bad for Oxford Hills/Buckfield as the Golden Trojans will certainly be hungry for a big win after last week’s loss to Bonny Eagle.
4. Biddeford (3-2, vs. Skowhegan tonight)
The Tigers bounced back from two straight losses with an impressive 22-0 shutout of Mt. Ararat last Friday. Biddeford will look to improve its position in the playoff standings with a win over visiting Skowhegan (3-2).
5. Sanford
(3-2, at South Portland tonight)
The Spartans opened the season with losses to Bonny Eagle and Scarborough but since then they have won three straight games. Sanford could easily be 4-2 heading into Week 7 if the Spartans play well tonight.
6. Old Orchard Beach (3-2, vs. Mountain Valley on Saturday)
It will be a battle of 3-2 teams on Saturday as both look for a crucial Class D South win. The Seagulls will be celebrating homecoming and hope to send the OOB fans home happy.
7. Massabesic
(0-5, at Bonny Eagle tonight)
It’s been a rough season for the Mustangs and it won’t get any easier tonight when they face powerhouse Bonny Eagle.
