It’s a strange week for the Journal Tribune Power Rankings as Kennebunk played their Week 5 game last night, while the rest of the teams will take the field either tonight or Saturday.
Kennebunk took care of business against a struggling Brunswick squad on Thursday night. Last week’s top team, Thornton Academy, will have its toughest test of the season when the Golden Trojans host defending state champion Bonny Eagle on Saturday. The Wells Warriors will head on the road to take on Oak Hill a week after the Warriors, who won the Class C state title last season, escaped with a win over Madison/Carrabec.
Here are this week’s rankings:
1. Kennebunk (5-0, beat Brunswick 35-0)
The Rams have earned their spot on top of the rankings as they have been pretty dominant all season long — including last night’s victory over the team that beat them in last year’s state final.
2. Thornton Academy (4-0, host Bonny Eagle Saturday)
The Golden Trojans have proven they are not rebuilding this season as they have reloaded and been impressive so far this season. They will face a tough test on Saturday.
3. Wells (4-0, visit Oak Hill Saturday)
The Warriors were on top of these rankings through the first two weeks and they easily could still be at the top. Wells struggled last week in a comeback win over Madison/Carrabec. The Warriors will look to return to their dominant ways on Saturday.
4. Old Orchard Beach (3-1, visit Madison/Carrabec tonight)
The Seagulls are off to a strong start this season and will look to continue their impressive run against a tough Madison/Carrabec team.
5. Sanford (2-2, host Bangor tonight)
The Spartans started off the season with losses to powerhouse Bonny Eagle and a talented Scarborough squad. Since then, the Sanford squad has won two straight including an impressive road win at Deering.
6. Biddeford (2-2, visit Mt. Ararat tonight)
The Tigers are looking to snap a two-game skid when they travel to Mt. Ararat tonight.
7. Massabesic (0-4, host Edward Little tonight)
It’s been a tough start to the season for the Mustangs, who have been outscored 181-47.
