The contest was one of several big plays for each team in both the special teams department and run game, but at the final whistle it was the Hawks defense, which forced four turnovers, that made the difference.
At the end of game Biddeford head coach Brian Curit said he was disappointed by the way his team came out to play.
“I’m disappointed. We practiced great all week and we came out and just didn’t perform tonight,” Curit said. “Marshwood’s a good team, they have a great head coach, but I think they’re a team we certainly could have beat.”
The first touchdown of the game went to the Hawks on a 50-yard screen pass to Marshwood senior Joe Taran in the first quarter. A few possessions later, Taran would go on to score again on an electrifying 88-yard reverse handoff to bring the score to 14-0.
The Tigers were able to build some momentum at the end of the first half and into the second.
Right before the half’s end, Tigers quarterback Carter Edgerton completed four passes for 51 yards, ending the half with a Tigers touchdown and bringing the score to 14-7.
The game started to open up at the start of the second half, as Marshwood capitalized on a fumble recovery in Tigers territory by scoring a touchdown off a 29-yard catch to the one yard line, followed up by a quarterback sneak. The Tigers answered immediately however with an 89-yard kickoff return touchdown by senior Scott Spellman, bringing the contest back to a one score game at 21-14 halfway through the third quarter.
The big plays continued for the Hawks however, as sophomore running back Justin Bryant ripped off a 47-yard touchdown run with 11 minutes left in regulation to make the game a two possession ballgame.
Marshwood would go on to score again on a long drive that started with an interception for the Hawks. The Tigers put up another score of their own, also off a long drive, that found the end zone with three minutes left in the game, bringing the score to 35-21.
The loss marks the Tigers first of the season. The team will host Falmouth next Friday who is 2-1 coming off a 51-34 loss to Kennebunk.
