It was another good week for local teams as Biddeford, Kennebunk, Thornton Academy and Wells all remained undefeated on the season.
That’s clearly a great thing for those four squads, but it also makes ranking the top four in the power rankings pretty tough.
This week will be a tough one for our top four local squads as Biddeford heads to Marshwood, TA takes on Scarborough, Kennebunk faces Falmouth and Wells will battle Cape Elizabeth. Depending on what happens tonight, there could be a major shakeup in the JT Power Rankings.
Here are this week’s rankings:
1. Wells (2-0)
The Warriors remain on top of our rankings as they are the defending state champs and have started the 2017 campaign on fire. Wells has outscored it’s first two opponents (Winthrop/Monmouth and Spruce Mountain) by an impressive 81-0 margin.
2. Thornton Academy (2-0)
The Golden Trojans have dismantled their first two opponents with a 46-6 win over Massabesic and a 55-12 thrashing of Deering. Quarterback Will Mitchell looks to be one of the top signal callers in the region and has weapons in CJ LaBreck and Anthony Bracamonte.
3. Biddeford (2-0)
Speaking of outstanding quarterbacks, junior Carter Edgerton has made a splash in his first two games as the Tigers’ QB. Biddeford has a strong run game led by Cam Lantagne and Curtis Petit and plenty of weapons for Edgerton to use on the outside. The Tigers took down defending state champion Brunswick last week on the road.
4. Kennebunk (2-0)
The Rams, who are the defending Class B South champs, have allowed just seven points this season while putting up 58 points on offense. Kennebunk’s defense is clearly one of the best in the area, and the offense has the athletes — led by Tripp Bush and Jake Littlefield — to put up plenty of points.
5. Old Orchard Beach (1-1)
The Seagulls led Winthrop/Monmouth by 10 at halftime last Friday, but they weren’t able to close it out as they fell 27-18. Despite the loss, this year’s OOB squad clearly has the talent to compete with everyone on its schedule.
6. Massabesic (0-2)
The Mustangs are winless on the year but have put up a good fight against both TA and South Portland. Nick Roberge is a strong QB and former QB-turned-wide receiver Isaac DesVergnes is a playmaker on the outside.
7. Sanford (0-2)
It’s been a tough start for the Spartans, but they also faced defending state champion Bonny Eagle in Week 1 and Class A South runner-up Scarborough last week. The Spartans will look to bounce back against rival Massabesic tonight.
