WELLS — The Town of Wells has selected a construction manager for the creation of a new public safety complex and fire substation.

Landry/French Construction, of Scarborough, has been chosen to be at the helm of the $14.25 million project.

During the last town meeting ballot in June, voters approved a bond for the construction of a new fire substation on Route 109 and a new fire and public safety building on U.S. Route 1 at the location of the current public safety complex by a vote of 1,176-580.

Town officials wanted a construction manager to work with the architect designing the facilities — reportedly New England architect firm Lavallee Brensinger — and had arranged for companies to submit requests for proposals to the town.

While the architect handles the design of the complexes, the construction manager would oversee all construction tasks, said Town Manager Jonathan Carter.

During a Board of Selectman’s meeting on Tuesday, Carter explained that out of seven companies that had made proposals the board had narrowed the choices down to four.

After workshops and discussions, the board felt that Landry/French Construction had the most responsive proposal to meet the projects needs, Carter said.

Their proposal comes in at $1.237 million.

The proposal was agreed on and passed 4-0-1, with one abstention from select board Vice Chairman Timothy Roche.
