CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox activated infielder Yoan Moncada from the 10-day disabled list and requested waivers on left-hander Derek Holland for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.
The White Sox also promoted left-hander Jace Fry from Double-A Birmingham. Fry, 24, a third-round pick in the 2014 draft, went 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 33 appearances with the Barons.
Moncada, who is widely regarded as one of baseball’s top prospects, was sidelined by a bone contusion on his right shin. He’s batting .188 with three homers and 11 RBI in 30 games with the White Sox.
Holland, 30, went 7-14 this season with a 6.20 ERA in 29 appearances, including 26 starts. He agreed to a $6 million, one-year contract with Chicago last December.
CUBS: Pitcher Jake Arrieta underwent an MRI on his achy right hamstring and could have his next start pushed back.
Arrieta left with one out in the third inning of Monday’s loss to Pittsburgh after experiencing what he described as a cramp in the hamstring. Arrieta said afterward he felt fine but the team opted for an MRI as a precaution.
Arrieta is scheduled to start Saturday when the first-place Cubs meet second-place Milwaukee at Wrigley Field.
PIRATES: The team extended contracts for General Manager Neal Huntington and Manager Clint Hurdle through 2021.
Both played integral parts in Pittsburgh’s emergence from 20 consecutive losing seasons. The Pirates reached the postseason in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
MARLINS: With Hurricane Irma bearing down on south Florida, Miami is allowing families of players and staff to travel with the team on their upcoming trip.
The Marlins will leave Miami after Wednesday night’s game against Washington for a seven-game trip to Atlanta and Philadelphia.
• Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman began two days of meetings to ease the transition in their investment group’s pending purchase of the team, a person familiar with the discussions said.
