SKOWHEGAN — The Marshwood High School football team isn’t going to make a longer trip than the 21/2-hour bus ride it made to Skowhegan on Friday. The trip gave the Hawks plenty of time to think about how bad the ride home would feel with a loss.

“It’s not worth it to come all the way here to lose,” Marshwood running back Kyle Glidden said.

Just seconds into the game, Glidden and the Hawks made sure the trip was worth it. Glidden ran 71 yards for a touchdown on Marshwood’s first play from scrimmage, setting the tone in a 55-12 win.

Glidden took the handoff from quarterback Tommy Springer and cut right. Seeing a block, Glidden cut back to the left, pointing out would-be Skowhegan tacklers to his blockers as he worked his way down the field.

“The best part of that play was every skill position guy and every lineman was hustling downfield to make a block,” Glidden said.

With just over five minutes to play in the first quarter, Justin Bryant caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Springer, pushing the Hawks’ lead to 14-0. Marshwood continued to pour it on in the second quarter, scoring 28 points to take a 42-0 halftime lead.

Glidden led a balanced Marshwood attack with 116 yards on eight carries, and also had an 8-yard touchdown catch from Springer. Bryant ran for 96 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Springer ran for 79 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run.

He also threw for 62 yards.

Skowhegan did move the ball, but three interceptions – two inside the Hawks’ 2-yard line – killed drives.

“Offensively, we just didn’t finish,” Skowhegan Coach Ryan Libby said.

Hunter Washburn ran for 62 yards and caught four passes for 46 yards for Skowhegan. Washburn’s 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth put Skowhegan on the board.
