CAPE ELIZABETH — A week after being shut out in a preseason scrimmage against Greely, Cape Elizabeth scored on its first seven possessions Friday night for a convincing 48-0 Class C football victory over visiting Yarmouth.
“We saw what we needed to work on and worked on it,” said Cape Elizabeth senior running back Jack Glanville, who scored three touchdowns and churned out 118 yards on the ground – all in the first half.
It was 35-0 at intermission, which meant the second half was played under running time. Cape Elizabeth never punted. Yarmouth, with five seniors to Cape Elizabeth’s 16, managed four first downs in the first three quarters and didn’t cross midfield until the fourth.
“We’re a little bit younger than most teams in our conference this year,” said Yarmouth Coach Jason Veilleux. “We did see some improvements but obviously we have a long way to go.”
With Glanville running hard off tackle and around end, and bruising fullback Ryan Weare (87 yards on 14 carries) doing likewise up the middle, junior quarterback Andrew Hartel was effective with play-action passing.
Hartel completed 8 of 10 attempts for 110 yards, including scoring strikes of 12 yards to Jacob Brydson and eight to Glanville, following an interception in the final minute of the first half.
“We have a lot of offensive threats,” Glanville said, “which is tough for a defense to guard. But I don’t really think about it defensively. I just do my thing on offense.”
Glanville went in untouched from 18 yards on Cape’s first possession to cap a seven-play drive that included a 20-yard completion to Matt Conley. Weare ran up the middle for 13 to end a six-play, 80-yard drive that also had one long pass, of 40 yards, to Matt Laughlin.
Hartel was 3 of 4 on the next scoring drive, of 71 yards. Brydson sidestepped a defender after a short pass and scampered in for the touchdown. Glanville scored from 5 yards out with less than two minutes remaining and Cape Elizabeth had one more chance after a Jack Tower interception.
Tower’s 34-yard touchdown was negated by a blocking in the back penalty on the return, giving the Capers possession at the Yarmouth 15 with 24 seconds remaining in the half. On third down, Hartel threw a strike to Glanville for his third touchdown and Alex Morin booted his fifth straight PAT kick to make it 35-0.
Jacob Budischewsky scored from 19 yards and Morin’s kick hit the left upright for a 41-0 lead late in the third quarter. Joe Clancy blocked a Yarmouth punt to set up the final touchdown, a 5-yard run by Zach Stewart.
“Typically, first games of the year are sloppy,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Aaron Filieo said. “We talked about coming out, playing clean, limiting penalties and executing our offense. I thought we did a good job with that.”
Cape Elizabeth travels to Gardiner next week and Yarmouth to Oak Hill.
“Cape’s always a solid team,” Veilleux said. “I wouldn’t say they’re unstoppable by any means, but they certainly present a balanced challenge.”
