YORK COUNTY —  To some, the love of learning can be a lifelong quest and that could be the motto for York County residents taking advantage of opportunities at York County Senior College this fall.

A full lineup of classes awre waiting for students over the age of 50 at locations in Springvale, Saco and Kennebunk through the senior college.

Classes will open the week of Sept. 11 at the Anderson Learning Center and the Public Library in Springvale, Trinity Episcopal Church and the University Center in Saco, and Huntington Common in Kennebunk and most run for about eight weeks.

Instruction is offered in Springvale on Wednesdays and Fridayscat the Springvale Library.  In “Bring a Book to Breakfast,” instructor Arlene Jackson will lead readers through a number of books that will prompt thoughtful discussions. 

Other classes at the Anderson Learning Center are held Fridays. Some include Dr. David Moberg’s “Open Art Group,” which welcomes beginners and advanced artists to work in their media of choice, and “Writing Your Memoirs,” which gives students a way to capture and share their legacy under the tutelage of instructor Fleurette Bannon. 

The Anderson Learning Center also will host classes Friday afternoons includin a class about classic movies led by instructor Ted Hargrove and a six-week class focusing on the island nation of Cuba led by instructor Zenaida Maicas.

A Kennebunk class on Monday afternoons will be “Psychology Looks at Issues of our Times II” led by instructor Mike Berkowitz.  The class will cover American identity, education, health care, race, media, inequality, politics and justice.

Instructor Adele Millette is offering “Aging Peacefully with Meditation” in four sessions at Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco. A six-session introduction called “Basics of Drawing,” will be taught in Saco   by Carol Santora and is for beginners and anyone seeking a review of art principles.

Other Saco classes include “Aging to Sag-ing” at University College in Saco; “Art Experimentation” at Trinity Episcopal Church;  “Jazz is King” at University College; and “Climate Change:  Hoax or Reality?” at University College.  There also will be a series of “Fall Foliage Walks” and an “Introduction to Oil Pastels” at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Also in Saco, Nancy Ponzetti offers a class about the “History of Buxton and Hollis” at Trinity Episcopal Church and Dr. Joan Mento will lead an exploration of “Shakespeare: The Taming of the Shrew at Trinity Episcopal Church. At University College, more current theater classics will be visited in “Broadway’s Eight Longest Runs,” an always-popular blend of history and music with Lorraine Masure. 

The mission of York County Senior College is to provide a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for anyone age 50 years or older.  Since its inception in 1999, the college has been governed by a volunteer committee which oversees its general operations. 

York County Senior College is a program of the University of Maine System University College at Saco.

Students may register for classes by sending in the forms received in the mail. Anyone needing a registration form can call 282-4030.  Forms also are available on the YCSC website at   http://yorkcountyseniorcollege.org. 

Registration closes September 6.
