SIDNEY — A baby went to the hospital to get glass shards taken out of her ear after the vehicle she was in was struck Wednesday evening by a rock while traveling down Interstate 95.

Maine State Police say they’re searching for those whoever dropped the rock from the Dinsmore Road overpass.

A couple was traveling north on I-95 near Sidney around 8:30 p.m. in a single cab pickup with their 8-week-old infant, according to a post on the Maine State Police Facebook page, when a rock was thrown at their windshield as they went under the Dinsmore Road overpass.

Everyone in the pickup was “covered in glass” from the broken windshield, according to the post.

The couple took the baby to a hospital in Waterville to get small shards of glass out of her ear, said Trooper John Lacoste, who didn’t know the condition of the baby.

Last Wednesday, Aug. 16, a similar incident happened when a couple traveling northbound under the same overpass in Sidney said their vehicle was struck by an object. Police aren’t releasing the time of the incident, although Lacoste said it was dark, or what the object was. There was no damage or injuries.

While objects aren’t pelted onto cars in this area all the time, it has happened before, Lacoste said.

“That is the most popular overpass for this happening,” he said.

Police did not return a call seeking additional information on Thursday.

In 1999, a University of Alabama professor was killed when a 22-pound rock was thrown at her car from an overpass while she was driving along Interstate 75 in Florida, according to the Associated Press. One of the suspects involved was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for second-degree murder.

Maine State Police are hoping to catch the suspects in Wednesday’s case, saying they believe those responsible live in the immediate area. Police said they want to catch the suspects before someone gets “really hurt. That’s what we’re worried about.”

Authorities asked that anyone with information on the suspects to contact Lacoste at 474-3350 or 624-7076.
