A local woman was killed Wednesday in St. Albans following a two-car crash in the morning at the intersection of Square Road and Route 43, also known as Corinna Road.
Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said Madeline Nangle, 63, of St. Albans, was driving a Green 2009 4-door Toyota Camry, which had stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded into the intersection, when the crash happened about 10:30 a.m. A Gray 2012 4-door Ford Fusion struck the Toyota on the driver’s side. Nangle was with her 7-year-old granddaughter from New Hampshire, who was in the backseat.
Nangle was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she later died, according to Lancaster.
The Ford Fusion was driven by Nadia Viles, 28, of St. Albans, who was motoring east on Route 43 when her car struck Nangle’s car. Deputy Joseph Jackson responded to the crash.
All drivers and occupants were wearing seat belts, Lancaster said. Viles and Nangle’s 7-year-old granddaughter were taken by ambulance to Sebasticook Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The crash scene is being reconstructed by Maine State Police. The sheriff’s office, which was assisted by St. Albans and Hartland fire departments, said investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
Both vehicles have been impounded and were destroyed, Lancaster said.
